An encounter of young Carmelites in the Philippines

Event
The Carmelite Family in the Philippines recently organized a youth gathering with the theme, Kabataang Karmelita: Pinalakas sa Pag-ibig, Pananalangin, at Paglilingkod, Tungo sa Pagkakaisa ng mga Komunidad ng Simbahan (Carmelite Youth: Strengthened in Love, Prayer, and Service, towards the Unity of Communities in the Church).

The activity was held at the Mother of Life Center in Novaliches, Quezon City last May 28, 2017. It gathered 48 youths from member Carmelite congregations.

In his sharing with the participants, Br. Ritche Salgado, O.Carm., pointed out the importance of community in Carmelite life. He pointed out the Biblical basis of community life in Carmel as laid down in the Rule of St. Albert.

He also shared how the church, when viewed as a samahan (group) is best appreciated by its members.
Motivational speaker Lucy Perez of Kadluan Group and Inner Space Manila shared her experience on meditation, sparked by a Jesuit retreat she had early in her spiritual journey.

She said that this helped enrich her relationship with God as it allowed her to accurately go within the self in order to be able to connect with God, and which in turn would allow her to serve others better.

This, she said, helped her overcome her weakness in loving those who have hurt her.
The participants were guided to some workshops that would help them experience the different concepts presented to them by the speakers. They were taught how to see the good qualities of the other, how they define the church and the samahan (group), and for them to reflect and share their experience of community as a samahan (group).

Br. Ritche, ended the sharing, saying that each one is a bakas (mark) of God that would lead others to experience the pamamayani ng kagandahang loob ng Diyos (reign of the Kingdom of God), and this , he said, should be what others see and experience in Carmelite communities, especially among young people, in order to attract more into the samahan (group).

The youth encounter is a yearly activity of the Philippine Carmelite Family.
