What is weighing you down?

Gospel Reflection

Jesus said:
"Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light."

What’s weighing you down today?

In our time today—where we often find ourselves stuck overthinking—so many things weigh heavily on us. Our hearts are restless. And how could they not be? Prices keep going up, bills are piling high, and yet our salaries stay the same. How can we stretch the little we have to meet all our needs? That’s why many of us can’t focus anymore—not in prayer, not even in our work. Our minds are filled with our worries and burdens.

Because of this, we look for ways to ease the weight. But the problem is, we often turn to worldly solutions—ones that actually end up making things worse. What do I mean by that?

Gambling. Some get into it for the thrill, thinking that even a brief moment of joy or a lucky win will ease the pain. But we know how it works—gambling is a scam. More people lose than win. Don’t fall for luck, my friends. How many families have already been destroyed because of this?

What else? Vices—alcohol, drugs, and more. Some enter into relationships they know are sinful—in other words, affairs—because they feel more "loved" by the other person. Of course, especially if you’re generous with gifts and attention.

We fool ourselves into thinking these worldly fixes will lighten our load.

But in today’s first reading, we heard how God called Moses—a huge and heavy responsibility. And yet, God also reassured Moses: Take courage. I am with you. Tell the people of Israel, I am who am. They’ll understand. They’ll listen to you because they’ll know that I am with you.

And in today’s Gospel, what did Jesus say to His followers? After praying for them, He tells them plainly: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened.

Let’s turn to Jesus, brothers and sisters—not to the ways of the world. Because with Jesus, what He offers is true rest and relief, no matter what we’re carrying.

The truth is, even if our problems aren’t solved right away, even if we don’t suddenly become rich, trusting in Jesus means trusting in the love of God—a love that, as Scripture says, knows even how many hairs are on your head. It's the kind of faith that helps us see our hardships as trials that will pass. So keep going. Don’t give up. Offer it all to God. Believe and trust in His love.

May it be that in the midst of every trial, our faith and trust in God grow stronger, and our grip on Him tighter. Let this be our prayer.
